Windermere:
After breakfast, start your full-day Beatrix Potter tour. The much-loved children's author and illustrator had close ties with the Lake District, where she spend a majority of her life. You'll begin your Beatrix Potter experience by being driven to Lake Windermere, where you'll board the ferry to cross the lake, giving you plentiful opportunities to soak up the beautiful mountain scenery. On the far shore, it's a short drive to Near Sawrey, where Beatrix Potter spent much of her adult life. Here, you'll meet your local guide, who lives in Beatrix Potter's old house, Castle Cottage, and is a recognized authority on her life as well as the surrounding area. You'll begin with an informative tour of Castle Cottage as well as the more famous Hill Top; the farmhouse that Beatrix loved. It was the place where she wrote 13 of her 23 books and where many of her most famous scenes are set. Today, it remains her personal museum, furnished and untenanted; just as she asked for it to be when she left it to the National Trust in 1943. You'll be served refreshments back at Castle Cottage, where you can sit in the private and beautiful garden if the weather is fine, or else in the living room where Beatrix Potter did much of her writing.

This large, welcoming bar on the corner of Lawnmarket, pays homage to a man whose fascinating double life is said to have inspired Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde among others. Another option is The Conan Doyle Pub, located at nearby Picardy Place. This impressive statue of Sherlock Holmes, is a veritable shrine to this famous author, and his most famous creation. Dinner is on your own this evening and a chance to try some of Scotland's national dishes, which includes haggis, neeps and tatties, salmon, the famous Aberdeen Angus beef, shortbread, and their biggest export, whisky.
