Amazonas Jungle Lodges: Sandoval Lake Lodge
Located in the Tambopata National Reserve, Sandoval Lake Lodge is perched above what many rainforest specialists feel is the most attractive lake in Peru, and provides access to one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet.

Arrive Sandoval Lake Lodge:

You will be met at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, and transferred to the port. Board a motorized canoe for a 25-minute boat ride on the Madre de Dios River to the trailhead to Sandoval Lake Lodge. From here you will hike for two miles along a forest trail leading to a small canal where you board a canoe and your guide will paddle 220 yards across the lake to the lodge. After lunch, learn about the history of the lodge and the philosophy of its founders. In the afternoon, explore the west end of the lake in the catamaran. Return to the lodge for a short video, or slide presentation, followed by dinner. For those with lots of energy, the guide will take you on a short night-walk into the forest behind the lodge.

Sandoval Lake Lodge:

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable you to be on the lake for sunrise, and a possible encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by a morning excursion to see wild Brazil Nut trees. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, board the catamaran for more exploration of the eastern part of the lake, with the possibility of seeing the Brown Capuchin Monkey and the Squirrel Monkey. Before dinner, enjoy an informative natural history video or slide presentation. After dinner, look for Black Caiman on the lake, or to go on a short walk through the primary forest.

Sandoval Lake Lodge:

After breakfast, cross the lake by catamaran and take a short walk into the interior of the Maurita palm forest. Here you can view the impressive morning concentrations of parrots, parakeets, and large and small macaws. (Yellow headed parrot, Mealy parrot, Blue headed Parrot, Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Chestnut fronted Macaw, Dusky headed Parakeet, Red bellied Macaw, Cobalt winged Parakeet, and Tui Parakeet).

Cross the lake to explore a primary forest trail and to see the impressive ancient rainforest trees and lianas. As we walk, the guide will explain the ecology of the rainforest and its diverse flora and fauna. Return to the lodge for lunch. Afternoon at leisure to independently explore some of the forest trails using the trail map; or stroll through the medicinal plant garden; watch hummingbirds visiting the nectar feeders, or the tanagers visiting our fruit feeders. In the cooler late afternoon, board the catamaran to explore the lake, and hopefully experience a spectacular sunset over the lake. Return to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, look for Black Caiman on the lake, or go on a short night hike through the forest.

Depart Sandoval Lake Lodge:

After an early pre-dawn breakfast, paddle around the west end of the lake for another glimpse of the Giant Otters. Then board a motorized canoe for the 35-minute return trip to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to the Airport for the flight back to Cuzco, or Lima, where your jungle adventure ends.
