Lovely Lake Orta

A stunning retreat in northern Italy, Lake Orta is a place of romance and unspoiled Italian beauty. The town that bears the same name is everything we've ever dreamed of: quiet old town squares, little cafes where the elderly still play the card game Briscola every afternoon, narrow alleyways and crystal blue water to complement all the beauty found on its shores.

Let us show you around the charming streets of Orta, that jealously hides the lake view until you reach Piazza Motta. Set out to the island of San Giulio or to the medieval Monte Sacro, before ending your day at one of the local restaurants.

Orta:

In the morning you will have a private two-hour tour of the city with a local guide. The multi-colored village of Orta with its historical buildings, interesting shops and typical cafes - is one of the most romantic places in Northern Italy. It stands at the foot of a little peninsula stretching into the lake, on the top of which stands the famous "Monte Sacro". Your guide will meet you at the hotel and walking along the narrow, cobblestone lanes you can easily feel like travelling in the past: medieval walls and stone just close to little, elegant baroque buildings. Here and there wonderful views of the lake appear suddenly, until you reach the ancient and scenic Piazza Motta, Orta's true heart, from which you'll enjoy a marvelous view of the Island. In a few minutes you will reach by public motorboat an enchanting place: the Island of San Giulio is little but rich of history. It will seduce you with its magic atmosphere. In the middle of the island stands a huge old building, the home to about one hundred Benedictine nuns. A leisurely walk of 20 minutes around the island will be an unforgettable experience of relaxation and peace.

Afternoon and evening at leisure.

Orta:

Day at leisure. We recommend that you visit the Sacro Monte di Orta, one of the nine Sacred Mountains in Northern Italy. A 15-minute walk from Piazza Motta brings you to this beautiful hilltop, with 21 votive chapels situated among the trees, built in the 16th and 17th centuries and dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. Each chapel contains rich mural paintings and many terracotta statues depicting an episode from Francis' life. There are many stunning views of the lake and the town as you wander through this village of chapels. As an alternative to walking, there is a small train to the top of the mountain that leaves from the Tourist Office on Via Panoramica. After exploring the Sacred Mountain, you can either take the train or walk back to town.

Afternoon and evening at leisure.
