Travel the timeline of Central American history, from Suchitoto, the "place of the bird flower", to Cerén, the "Pompeii of the Americas", and finally to Guatemala City, a busy cosmopolitan capital. Along the way, you'll walk cobbled streets and disappear into art galleries, trek volcanoes and explore historical sites.

Arrival at San Salvador:
You will be welcomed at the airport by one of our Tour Representatives, and then have a 1 1/2 hour ground transfer to the Colonial town of Suchitoto. Overnight at Suchitoto.

Colonial Architecture tour of Old Suchitoto:
The enchanting city of Suchitoto is also known as the "Place of the Flower Bird" for its name in Nahuatl. The city is full of colonial architecture and beautiful cobblestone streets, with many art galleries. One of the most important buildings is Santa Lucia Church built in 1853. Suchitoto was probably founded by the indigenous Pipiles tribe in the 11th century. Enjoy a boat ride along the Suchitlán Lake, and visit a private local indigo workshop to learn how to dye with this "blue gold."

Joya de Cerén with Lake and Volcano Complex:
After breakfast, transfer to Joya de Cerén, known as the "Pompeii of the Americas" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its contribution to the understanding of Mayan Civilization. Then visit the Lake and Volcanoes National Park to see Cerro Verde, Izalco and Ilamatepec Volcanoes. Finish with sightseeing to beautiful Coatepeque Lake.

The Flower's Route Tour:
After breakfast, you'll explore the beauty of the San Salvador area with a full-day tour the famous flower route, exploring several villages. You'll arrive at the traditional town of Nahuizalco, famous for handicrafts and furniture made from tulle and willow. Learn about the famous market at dusk, lit only by candles. Then head up the mountain to Salcotitán—located at 3,400 feet and the site of the first coffee plantations, planted in the 1860s. This town also has lots of craft shops. Next visit Juayúa, famous for its permanent food festival, Feria Gastronomica. Next you'll visit Apaneca, a town of tile-roofed houses and beautiful views across the mountains. Finally return to Ataco, which like Apaneca is known for its coffee cultivation.

Ataco to Guatemala City:
Enjoy the morning on your own in Ataco before your 3-hour drive to Guatemala City.

Guatemala City to Tikal:
Morning transfer to Guatemala City Airport before a flight to Tikal. A representative will pick you up and take you to your Yaxha and Topoxte Ruins Tour. The city is contemporary to Tial and is located on the northeastern side of Lake Yaxha. Over 1,400 monuments have been mapped and an excavation program has been taken place in the last 10 years, exposing some of its magnificent architecture. In the afternoon transfer to your hotel. Overnight.

Tikal Tour and Transfer to Antigua:
Early morning departure for a Tour of the Tikal Ruins. Visit the Twin-Pyramid Complexes Q and R, Lost World Complex where the Great Pyramid and Temple 5C-49 are the most important. Also, visit Temple III and the Palace of the Windows, the Great Plaza, squared off with the pyramids of the Grand Jaguar and the Masks, the Palace of the highest of the Mayan pyramids. From its top a complete view of Tikal and its surrounding jungle can be enjoyed. In the afternoon transfer to Santa Elena Airport in Flores, Peten, for the flight to Guatemala City. Transfer by car to Antigua. Overnight.

Antigua:
After breakfast, morning at leisure. Then take the Private Antigua Afternoon Tour. Founded by the Spaniards in 1543, the colonial city of Antigua was once the cultural center for all Central America. You will see Ciudad Vieja, Guatemala's first permanent capital, destroyed in 1541 by earthquakes and a flood. Visit the city's famous churches, monasteries, museums and colonial buildings, all of which have contributed to the city being named Monument of the Americas in 1965. Among the most celebrated are La Merced Church, Las Capuchinas and Santa Clara Convent. You will also have an opportunity to visit a jade factory before returning to you hotel.
