Arriving at Chiang Mai Airport, meet your English-speaking guide for your private transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure for relaxation or exploring.
This evening, enjoy the delicious gourmet "Khantoke" Food, the symbol of Northern Thai cuisine, including appetizers, main course, desserts and coffee or tea. A variety of graceful Chiang Mai traditional dancers and selected hill tribe dancers will perform their colorful, original and photogenic, traditional dances. These can be viewed while dining on low tables while seated on traditional floor mats with comfortable cushions Lanna Thai style.
After breakfast, meet your guide for a private tour around this famous city and get an up-close and personal look at some of its most notable temples, as well as stops at its old city walls, gates and moat. You'll begin with a steep drive to the venerable 600-year old Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, the sacred temple with a challenging flight of steps, flanked by Naga Serpents. Reaching the top, you're rewarded with superb views of the city. You'll also visit Wat Chedi Luang, the site of a formerly massive pagoda that was unfortunately destroyed in the great earthquake of 1545, and Wat Phra Singh, the lovely Lai Kam chapel that houses the revered Phra Singh Buddha image. In the San Kamphaeng handicraft district, watch artisans practicing ancient Thai arts and crafts, and learn more about the generations-old traditions.
Today is free for some independent sightseeing. Chiang Mai's Old City is practically a living museum. Its narrow streets are lined with beautiful temples, old shops and historical buildings, all surrounded by the crumbling ancient walls and the moat.
This evening, enjoy a private tour of Chiang Mai's colorful night markets. Your guide will escort you through the labyrinth of stalls selling everything from local handicrafts to fun imitation goods. Choose from an astonishing variety of souvenirs, including hand-painted umbrellas and parasols. You can even have a suit measured and ready for your collection the following evening!
Then stop at the Ploen Rudee night market for some of Chiang Mai's best street eats including sticky rice with mangoes.
Meet your driver/guide in the hotel for a private tour of the Araksa Tea Garden. Located on a scenic, evergreen hill in Mae Tang, this plantation specializes in producing high quality Assam tea, a black tea named after the name of India's largest tea growing region.
Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by their staff, who will explain the different processes and methods used to cultivate young tea plants. After that, the local tea planters will lead you to the tea bushes where they will show you how to pick tea leaves. You are more than welcome to join them, and be given a bamboo basket to carry during the tea picking activity. At the roasting station, you'll get a first-hand demonstration on the art of making tea by hand, from kneading to roasting tea leaves. When the roasting is done, enjoy a cup of tea accompanied by a delicious Thai snack.
After breakfast, meet your guide in the hotel lobby for your private transfer to the airport for your return home, or onward to your next Avanti Destination!
