Belize City - San Ignacio:

After breakfast. Meet your driver for the transfer to San Ignacio. En route, we'll stop at the Caves Branch Outpost for some outdoor adventures: a Zipline Tour followed by Cave Tubing. The Outpost is located a few hundred feet from the Caves Branch River and its winding waterway through the ancient caves once inhabited by the Maya. Become a "Zip rider" today as you connect to a series of overhead cables criss-crossing the rainforest canopy. The zipline course features a 'beginner's zip run' of only 150 feet. Six other zip runs range in length from 200' to 600' between treetop platforms secured in the canopy of tropical hardwood trees. Intriguing karst limestone cliffs provide a scenic backdrop as you zip through the rainforest canopy. It is fully insured and also certified by Challenge Course Technologies (ACCT). Your Cave Tubing adventures starts with a jungle trail hike where your guide will point out various plants, roots, and herbs once used by the ancient Maya. The entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system is the start of an 'eye opening' adventure. Your guide hands out head-lamps, and you are ready to float in inflated inner tubes assisted by gentle currents taking you through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the caves and stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. After such an invigorating morning, select your lunch from a wide range of buffet items from the 'Canopy Cafe'. Afterwards, we'll head to San Ignacio and overnight at your chosen hotel.

San Ignacio:

Attention spelunkers! Today is your day as a tour of Actun Tunichil Muknal, (Cave of the Stone Sepulcher) is on the agenda. Locally referred as the "ATM cave", it's a hiking and adventure experience* with the added dimension of being an educational trip for those interested in archaeology. Additionally it's ranked as one of the "Top Ten Caves Of The World" by the National Geographic Society. Located in the heart of the Belize rainforest, this cave was a sacred place to the prehistoric Maya of Belize, who first began to use the entrance during the early classic period (300-600 A.D.). Later the Mayas traveled deeper into the cave to conduct their ceremonies. Visitors to the cave have the unique opportunity to witness a living museum where the human sacrifices and artifacts can be viewed in their original context.

San Ignacio:

A full day of adventure of walking through (and optional climbing) a Mayan temple followed by exploring an underground Mayan cave by canoe. Xunantunich (Mayan for "Maiden of the Rocks") was the first excavated Mayan site in Belize that was opened for the public. Though it is smaller compared to the other Mayan sites, it consists of one of the tallest structures. Upon arrival, it's a short walk up to the site and your guide will provide a briefing on safety procedures and what to expect. You'll be amazed at how impressive the Temple of El Castillo (the main temple) actually is at a remarkable 120 feet in height. You'll hear the detailed history of this once royal center of ancient civilization as your guide walks you through the site. Feel free to climb to the top of El Castillo for amazing views. Just look out for spider monkeys! After lunch, you'll experience "cave canoeing". Barton Creek is a living cave in that it is still growing and developing with 10ft of water flowing constantly throughout. Your guide will assist you with selecting your canoe and then help you to strap on your life jackets and headlamps. The adventure takes flight when you enter the lime stone cave and float for about 1 hour into the cave. Inside the cave you'll pass impressive natural crystal formations and various archaeological highlights, all which your guide will point out as you make your way upstream. This tour is fun-filled and educational, as well as refreshing and family- friendly. Upon exiting the cave, we'll head back to San Ignacio.
