Arrival:

Arriving at Arequipa airport, you'll meet your driver for your private transfer to your hotel. After checking in, meet your guide for a private scenic tour of Arequipa. Known as the white city, the primary building material used in Arequipa is a smooth white volcanic stone. One of the city's major attractions is the 16th century Monastery of Santa Catalina, which for more than 400 years housed an order of cloistered nuns. This convent was closed to the public for almost until 1970. It's still home to a few nuns, and provides a fascinating insight into their lives in the 16th century. The tour also includes a visit to the Plaza de Armas, a grandiose plaza surrounded by leafy palm trees. Nearby you will visit the towering 17th century cathedral with its marble altar, and the magnificent pulpit carved in Lille, France. Continue on to the Jesuit church of La Compania, with its beautifully painted chapel and carved stone arcades. After returning to your hotel, dinner is on your own this evening.

Arequipa to Colca Canyon:

After breakfast and checking out of your hotel, meet your guide for a full day tour as we head for Yura district, going around Chachani Volcano (6,075 meters over sea level). We'll pass by Pampa de Arrieros and Pampa Canaguas, both part of Aguada Blanca National Reserve and Salinas. There you will be able to observe the four species of South American camelids: vicunas, llamas, alpacas and wild guanacos, as well as a number of bird species such as flamingos, Andean geese, and hummingbirds. The journey will continue to the area known as "Window of Colca", where the Colca Valley begins. You'll pass through a beautiful landscape, viewing geological formations that resemble medieval structures, known as the Callally Enchanted Castles before arriving at the namesake village. We'll stop for lunch at the ghost town of Sibayo before continuing to Tuti, where the famous colcas are located. These were storehouses for the Incas containing clothing, raw materials and surplus food. We'll pass through Canocota Village, crossing the Incan bridge before descending to Chivay, a small village on the river of the Colca Valley. The tour ends at your Colca Canyon hotel and dinner will be on your own this evening.

Colca Canyon:

After breakfast, your private tour takes you to Colca; one of the deepest canyons in the world and Peru's answer to our Grand Canyon. Head to the Cruz del Condor lookout, a site which affords spectacular panoramic views. If the conditions are right, you might actually have the chance to take pictures of the majestic condor, the world's largest bird. They are scavengers and are very active in the mornings, soaring up to heights 7000 meters (4 miles). On your way back, you'll visit the colorful towns of Maca and Pinchollo, which offer beautiful views of the mountains. Dinner will be on your own this evening.
