Munich:
After breakfast at your hotel, take the U-Bahn (Munich subway system) to the Hauptbahnhof or main train station, where your hop-on/hop-off city tour will begin. The blue double-decker busses run every 20 minutes, so you can get off at a point of interest and rejoin the tour when you're ready. The tour could take as little as one hour or as much as the entire day, depending on how many stops you make. Some of the highlights include the art museums; the Marienplatz, site of the City Hall with its famous Glockenspiel; and Karlsplatz with its pedestrian zone and shopping center.

Munich to Salzburg:
After breakfast, check out of your hotel and make your way to the Hauptbahnhof, where you'll catch your train for Salzburg (about 1 1/2 hours). After checking into your hotel, venture out into the city to explore on your own.

Salzburg:
Today is free for you to explore Salzburg at your leisure. Take the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Castle, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. After enjoying the spectacular view over the town, take a tour of the state rooms, before returning down to the Cathedral Square (Domplatz), to visit the Cathedral and the Franciscan Church. Then stroll through St. Peter's district with its Cemetery, Church, Monastery and the Catacombs hewn out of the Mnchsberg. (This neighborhood was used for the later scenes in "The Sound of Music".) After lunch, maybe take a bus to Hellbrunn Palace, built by Archbishop Markus Sittikus, and enjoy a walk of the gardens with their many trick fountains. The gazebo used in two scenes in "The Sound of Music" is found in the garden here. Return to the city center and enjoy dinner at one of the fine restaurants in the Old Town.

Salzburg to Innsbruck:
After breakfast, return to the Salzburg Train Station to catch the train for Innsbruck—a two-hour journey. Nestled in the valley of the Inn River and surrounded by Tyrolean Alps, Innsbruck is an international winter sports center, having hosted the Winter Olympics twice in the past 50 years. Inhabited since ancient times, Innsbruck was fortified by the Romans in the 4th century, to protect the main route from Italy to Germany. The city center is striking, with several palaces and handsome churches, all with the nearby Alps as a backdrop.

Innsbruck to Lucerne:
After breakfast you'll catch your train to Lucerne, with a change of trains in Zurich (5 1/2 hours total travel time). Enjoy the beautiful alpine scenery on the way. One of the most charming towns in Switzerland, Lucerne's setting on a beautiful lake enhances your experience. Upon arrival, find your way to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Lucerne:
After breakfast, walk down to the lakeside in order to stroll around the Old Town. At 12:15 p.m., be at the City Tourist office, where you'll be picked up for your Mystic Mountain Tour. A short bus ride takes you to the suburb of Kriens, where you will take a ride on panoramic gondolas and an aerial cableway to the top of Mt. Pilatus (7,000 ft.). It is said that dragons used to inhabit Mt. Pilatus. Here you will discover the Dragon Path, as you enjoy an unforgettable view over the surrounding mountains and lakes. Then you'll descend on the world's steepest cogwheel railway to the lakeside village of Alpnachstad. Here you will catch one of the historic lake steamers for an unforgettable journey back to Lucerne, as you enjoy the surrounding alpine scenery.
